EDITORS COMMENTS
Philippe Hurault, Comte de Cheverny (1528-1599) was a prominent French politician and statesman during the late 16th century. This striking portrait, created as an illustration by Dunand and lithographed by Breton after an original painting in the gallery portfolio of Roger de Gaignières, provides a glimpse into the elegant and sophisticated appearance of the nobleman. Born into a noble family, Hurault rose through the ranks of the French political scene, serving as the President of the Parlement of Paris and later becoming a member of the Privy Council. He was known for his intelligence, diplomacy, and strong leadership, and played a key role in the political intrigues of the French court during the reigns of Henry II, Francis II, and Henry III. In this portrait, Hurault is depicted wearing the traditional attire of a French nobleman of the late 16th century. He wears a long, flowing doublet, cinched at the waist with a belt, and a voluminous, high-collared shirt. The doublet is adorned with intricate lace and embroidery, reflecting the wealth and status of its wearer. Hurault's hair is styled in the fashionable "beret-de-lunette" style, with a long, curled lock falling over his forehead. His piercing gaze and stern expression convey a sense of authority and determination. This beautifully hand-colored lithograph, taken from Paul Lacroix's "Costumes Historiques de la France," offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of French nobility during the late Renaissance period. The meticulous attention to detail in the illustration and the elegant, refined appearance of Hurault serve as a reminder of the rich history and cultural heritage of France during this time.
