This evocative photograph captures the exterior of the historic Lord Nelson pub in Bethnal Green, London. Established in the late 19th century, the pub was once a popular watering hole for locals and visitors alike. The Corner on view in this image shows the ornate brick facade adorned with intricate detailing and the distinctive sign of Lord Nelson atop the building. The pub was originally owned by the Charrington and Company Limited, a renowned brewery in East London. However, as of July 2018, the Lord Nelson, like many historic pubs in the area, was no more. Demolished to make way for new development, the loss of this pub was a sad reminder of the rapid changes taking place in the once vibrant and diverse community of Bethnal Green. Despite its demise, the memory of the Lord Nelson lives on through photographs like this one. The image invites us to imagine the stories and memories that were created within its walls, and to reflect on the rich history of public houses in London. The pub may be gone, but its legacy continues to shape the character and culture of this fascinating city.
