EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the Nelson Public House in Prittlewell, Essex, during the 1960s. The image, taken from the corner, showcases the pub's charming facade with its distinctive signage and red brick exterior. At the time, the Nelson was a popular local watering hole, managed by the Charrington and Company Limited, which had a rich trading history dating back to 1940, as detailed on the reverse of the print. The Nelson, located at SS0 7AB, was a beloved establishment in the community, providing a warm and welcoming atmosphere for its patrons. The pub's name, inspired by the famous British naval hero, Lord Nelson, added to its historical significance. However, the passage of time brought changes to Prittlewell, and the Nelson Public House was no exception. By July 2018, the pub had been renamed Trafalgar and later converted into Shamsuddin Court flats in 1963. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of a bygone era, when the Nelson was a thriving public house and a cherished gathering place for the residents of Prittlewell. The 1960s were an exciting time in British history, and this photograph offers a unique glimpse into the social and cultural landscape of the era. The Nelson Public House, with its inviting atmosphere and rich history, stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of community and the importance of local pubs in shaping the fabric of our towns and villages.
