EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Prince of Wales Public House, located in Camberwell (New), London, during the 1930s. The image presents a left-facing view of the pub's facade, showcasing its historic charm and character. The Prince of Wales, which had the address SE5 9QR, was a long-standing establishment that boasted a rich trading history, as evidenced by the back of the print. According to the records, the pub had been in operation since 1934 and continued to serve its community until 1961. The photograph was taken in 1937, a time when the Hoare and Company Limited, which was not the pub company, still owned the property. By July 2018, the pub had closed its doors following a bailiffs notice in December 2012. However, in 2014, permission was granted for the conversion of the ground and basement floors, suggesting new life may be on the horizon for this iconic building. The Prince of Wales Public House stands as a testament to the history and tradition of public houses in London during the 20th century. Its enduring presence in Camberwell (New) serves as a reminder of the role these establishments played in the lives of local communities, providing a place for social gatherings, conversation, and camaraderie.
