This evocative photograph captures the charming corner view of the Royal Oak Public House in the historic market town of Leatherhead, Surrey, England. The image transports us back in time to the 1960s, as depicted by the date inscribed on the back of the print (available upon request). The Royal Oak, with its red-tiled roof and ornate woodwork, stands proudly amidst the bustling townscape, beckoning visitors with its welcoming glow. The pub, which held a rich trading history since at least 1928 (as detailed on the reverse), was a cherished local institution for generations. The Royal Oak was part of the Overton Brewery, a well-known name in the Surrey area, and was a popular gathering place for friends, families, and the community. Unfortunately, this piece of history was lost in December 2017, when the pub was demolished without the necessary council permissions. The loss of the Royal Oak was a great disappointment to the local community, who had grown up with the pub as a beloved part of their lives. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the Royal Oak Public House and the memories it held for so many. It invites us to reflect on the past and appreciate the history that surrounds us, even as it fades away.
