This charming photograph captures the facade of the Toby Jug Public House in Tolworth, Greater London, as it looked in the 1930s. The Toby Jug was a beloved local establishment that was once a popular gathering place for residents of this historic area. The name of the pub is derived from the iconic Toby Jug figure, a traditional English ceramic jug with a jolly, rotund figure of Toby himself, a character from English folklore. The Toby Jug Public House was owned and operated by the Charrington and Company Limited, a well-known brewery in the UK during the early 20th century. The building, with its distinctive red brick exterior and ornate details, exudes a sense of history and tradition. The large, arched windows allow plenty of natural light to filter in, while the intricate stonework and decorative signage add character and charm. Unfortunately, by July 2018, the Toby Jug Public House had been demolished, leaving the site vacant. The back of this photograph print includes the address and date of the image, as well as the sad note that the pub no longer exists. Despite its demise, the memory of the Toby Jug lives on through photographs like this one, which serve as a reminder of the rich history and character of Tolworth and its community.
