This evocative photograph captures the facade of the United Service Public House, located in the heart of Woolwich, London, during the 1940s. The image, taken by an unknown photographer, presents a striking view of the pub's exterior, with its ornate brickwork and distinctive signage. The United Service PH was a popular local watering hole, having served the community since at least 1931, as evidenced by the trading record detailed on the reverse of this print. Tragically, the pub met its end in 1941 during the tumultuous wartime years. The building, which was owned by the Charrington and Company Limited, was one of many that succumbed to the devastating effects of the conflict. Today, the site where the United Service PH once stood is a poignant reminder of the past, a testament to the rich history of Woolwich and the resilience of its people.
