EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts Pipewort, Paepalanthus dendroides, a mesmerizing plant native to South America. The illustration is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The meticulous engraving was executed by Stanghi, under the direction of the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). Paepalanthus dendroides, also known by various other names including Curly Mesquite, Hilaria cenchroides, Ilaria, Cencroide, and Devegni, is a unique and intriguing plant. Its curved, tubular stems resemble pipes, giving it the common name Pipewort. The plant is edible, with both its fruit and vegetable parts being consumed in various traditional diets. Turpin, considered one of the greatest French botanical illustrators of the 19th century, expertly captured the intricate details of the Pipewort's structure, from its winding stems to its delicate flowers. The use of the stipple engraving technique, which involves the application of small dots to create texture and shading, adds depth and dimension to the illustration. This image not only showcases the beauty of the Pipewort but also highlights the remarkable skill and artistry of Turpin and the team behind this exquisite work. It is a testament to the rich history of botany and the dedication of those who have documented the natural world throughout the centuries.
