EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning lithograph by Karl Joseph Brodtmann, published in Heinrich Rudolf Schinz's Illustrated Natural History of Men and Animals in 1836, showcases the distinct differences between the Plains Zebra (Equus quagga) and Mountain Zebra (Equus zebra). The Plains Zebra, with its more densely striped coat and slightly rounded ears, is native to the open grasslands of eastern and southern Africa. In contrast, the Mountain Zebra, with its narrower stripes and pointed ears, is adapted to the rocky, mountainous terrain of southwestern Africa. Both species are part of the horse family, Equidae, and are characterized by their distinctive black and white stripes, which serve as excellent camouflage in the savanna and woodland habitats they inhabit. Unfortunately, these magnificent animals are currently listed as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. The Plains Zebra population is estimated to be around 250,000 individuals, while the Mountain Zebra population is estimated to be around 25,000 individuals. Threats to their populations include habitat loss, poaching for their meat and hides, and conflict with humans. Conservation efforts, such as protected areas and anti-poaching measures, are ongoing to help ensure the survival of these iconic animals.
