EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate engraving by Giovanni Antonio Sasso, taken from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World" published in Florence in 1847, offers a captivating glimpse into the architectural grandeur of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria. The image showcases the intricate plan of the Temple of Bel or Baal's courtyard, featuring a tomb and several columns. The Temple of Bel, also known as the Temple of Baal, was a significant religious site in Palmyra, dedicated to the god Bel or Baal, the chief deity of the city. The temple complex was renowned for its unique fusion of Greek, Roman, and local Arab architectural styles, reflecting Palmyra's rich cultural heritage. The plan reveals the meticulously designed courtyard, which was surrounded by a portico with Corinthian columns. The central feature of the courtyard is a large tomb, believed to be the tomb of King Seleucus II Callinicus, adorned with intricate carvings and decorative motifs. The temple itself, not shown in this image, was located to the north of the courtyard and was renowned for its impressive height and ornate decoration. The Temple of Bel was unfortunately destroyed during the Syrian Civil War in 2015, along with many other historic sites in Palmyra. This engraving serves as a poignant reminder of the beauty and historical significance of this ancient city and its architectural treasures.
