EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait print depicts Byzantine Emperors Leo III and Constantine VI, also known as Leo IV the Khazar and Constantine VI Constantinus, respectively. The image is a copperplate engraving extracted from "De Roomsche Monarchy," a comprehensive work on the Roman Monarchy authored by Francois Salma and published in Utrecht in 1697. Leo III, who ruled from 750 to 780, is shown on the left side of the print, wearing a crown adorned with precious stones and a long, flowing robe. His serious expression and piercing gaze convey a sense of authority and determination. Leo III is renowned for his military prowess and his efforts to strengthen the Byzantine Empire against external threats, particularly from the Arabs and Bulgarians. On the right side of the print, we find his son and successor, Constantine VI Constantinus, who ruled from 771 to 797. Younger Constantine is depicted wearing a similar regal attire, with a crown on his head and a scepter in his hand. His mother, Empress Irene, is believed to have played a significant role in the early years of his reign. The portrait also features other notable figures from the Byzantine Empire, including the empress Irene, who is shown holding a fan, and the emperor's son, Constantinus, who is depicted as a child. The print's classical style and intricate details provide a fascinating glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the Byzantine court during this period. The image serves as a testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of the Byzantine Empire, which lasted from the 4th to the 15th century. The use of copperplate engraving, a popular printing technique during the 17th century, adds to the print's historical significance and aesthetic appeal.
