In this portrait, we behold the visage of Marcus Maecilius Flavius Eparchius Avitus, the Western Roman Emperor who ruled from 455 to 456 AD. Avitus, born in Thrace, was a military man who rose through the ranks to claim the imperial throne. His reign was brief but significant, as he marked the transition from the Roman to the Byzantine period in the Western Roman Empire. Avitus is depicted here in the regal attire of a Roman Emperor, wearing a toga and a diadem adorned with pearls and precious stones.
