EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait depicts Roman Emperor Constantine the Great, born Flavius Valerius Aurelius Constantinus Augustus, in regal attire. Reigning from 306 to 337 AD, Constantine is considered one of the most successful and influential emperors in Roman history. He was the founder of Constantinople, which later became the capital city of the Eastern Roman Empire, and is also known for his edict of Milan, granting religious tolerance to Christians throughout the empire. The portrait, a copperplate engraving, is taken from Abraham Bogaert's "De Roomsche Monarchy," published in Utrecht in 1697. Bogaert's work was a significant contribution to the study of Roman history and featured numerous illustrations of Roman emperors and their reigns. This particular image of Constantine the Great is a testament to the enduring fascination with the Roman Empire and its leaders. Constantine's image is depicted with a serious expression and a well-groomed beard, wearing a toga and a diadem, the traditional headband of Roman emperors. The background is adorned with classical motifs, including columns and an archway, further emphasizing the emperor's connection to the rich history of Rome. As a token of his power and authority, Constantine's portrait was likely displayed in public places, such as temples, forums, and palaces, to inspire loyalty and awe among the populace. Today, this portrait serves as a reminder of the grandeur and complexity of the Roman Empire and the enduring legacy of its leaders.
