EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait represents Marcus Julius Philippus, better known as Philip the Arab, who ruled the Roman Empire from 244 to 249 AD. Born in Syria, Philip was the first non-Italian emperor in Roman history, marking a significant shift in the ethnic composition of the imperial throne. Philip's reign was marked by peace and stability, as well as a renewed focus on the eastern provinces. He continued the military reforms initiated by his predecessor, Gordian III, and maintained the military border along the Danube. Philip also showed favor to the Sassanid Empire, forging an alliance that would last for several decades. The portrait itself is a copperplate engraving from Abraham Bogaerts' "De Roomsche Monarchy," published in Utrecht in 1697. The 17th-century print offers a striking representation of Philip, depicting him as a regal and powerful figure with a strong jawline, piercing gaze, and a flowing beard. Philip wears the imperial diadem and a toga, symbolizing his high rank and Roman citizenship. The portrait is a testament to the enduring influence of Roman imperial iconography, which continued to shape European artistic traditions long after the fall of the empire. Philip's image, as captured in this engraving, serves as a reminder of the multicultural nature of the Roman Empire and the lasting impact of its artistic legacy.
