EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Publius Licinius Valerianus Augustus, better known as Roman Emperor Valerian (r. 253-260 AD), during his reign as the twenty-sixth Roman Emperor. Valerian, also known as Valerian the Elder, was born around 200 AD in Rome and ruled during a time of significant political instability and military crisis. Valerian's reign is notable for his eastern campaigns against the Sassanid Empire, during which he was captured and held for ransom by the Persian king Shapur I. His son and co-ruler, Gallienus, assumed control during Valerian's captivity and continued the war effort. This portrait, created as part of the 17th-century work "De Roomsche Monarchy" or "The Roman Monarchy" by Abraham Bogaerts, is a copperplate engraving. It provides a striking visual representation of Valerian's regal presence, with his imperial diadem adorned with pearls and the imperial purple robe signifying his high rank. The background features the traditional laurel wreath and the imperial eagle, symbolizing the power and authority of the Roman Emperor. Valerian's portrait is an essential piece of historical art, offering a glimpse into the appearance and symbolism of Roman imperial power during the late 3rd century AD. The intricately detailed engraving highlights the skill and craftsmanship of the 17th-century engraver, making it a valuable addition to any collection of classical art or Roman history.
