This stunning handfinished chromolithograph by Henry Noel Humphreys, based on an illustration by Jane Loudon from her book "Mrs. Jane Loudon's Ladies Flower Garden of Ornamental Perennials," published in London in 1849, showcases a beautiful collection of Potentilla species. The illustration features Hopwoods Pontetilla (Potentilla hopwoodiana), also known as Dark-red Potentilla, with its rich, velvety red blooms; Potentilla atro-sanguineum, or Scarlet-flowered Potentilla, with its bright scarlet blossoms; and Geum coccineum, or Scarlet Avens, with its vibrant, tubular flowers. Additionally, the illustration includes Potentilla atro-sanguineum var. album, or Mountain Sieversia, with its white blooms, and Potentilla hopwoodiana var. rosea, or Pink Hopwoods Pontetilla. These attractive perennials were popular choices for Victorian gardens due to their hardiness, ease of cultivation, and long blooming season.
