EDITORS COMMENTS
Prince Louis, Duke of Nemours (1814-1896), is depicted in this stunning handcoloured lithograph in the military uniform of a Marechal-de-camp. The Duke, whose full name was Louis-Charles-Philippe-Raphael d'Orleans, was a member of the French royal family and a prominent military figure during the Second French Empire. Born on March 15, 1814, in Paris, Prince Louis was the son of King Louis-Philippe I and his wife, Maria Amalia of the Two Sicilies. He joined the military at a young age and rose through the ranks, becoming a Marechal-de-camp in 1852. This prestigious title was granted to him by his cousin, Napoleon III, who ruled France as Emperor from 1852 to 1870. The Duke of Nemours is shown here in his full military regalia, with a red tunic adorned with gold braid and buttons, a white waistcoat, and a blue sash with the royal fleur-de-lis emblem. His helmet sits atop his head, and he holds a sword in his right hand. The intricate detail of the uniform, as well as the rich colors and shading of the handcolouring, make this a truly captivating image. This lithograph was produced by the French publishing house Le Bibliophile Jacob, also known as Paul Lacroix, as part of their series "Costumes Historiques de la France" (Historical Costumes of France). The series, which was published between 1852 and 1865, aimed to document and preserve the traditional costumes and uniforms of France. This particular image of Prince Louis, Duke of Nemours, is a testament to the high-quality production values of the series and offers a fascinating glimpse into the fashion and military history of the Second French Empire.
