EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases four rare and beautiful species of Iris: Iris pumila, Iris biflora (also known as Two-flowered Flower de Luce or Iris bifora), Iris pumila var. nudicaulis, and Iris biflora var. alba. The image is taken from John Lindley and Robert Sweet's Ornamental Flower Garden and Shrubbery, published by G. Willis in London in 1854. The illustration was meticulously created by the skilled hands of Weddell, after the observations and drawings of Edwin Dalton Smith. The Pygmy Iris, Iris pumila, is a tiny, low-growing plant native to the Mediterranean and the Middle East. Its delicate, violet-blue flowers bloom in late spring and are adorned with fine white veins. The Two-flowered Flower de Luce, Iris biflora, is a rhizomatous perennial that produces two flowers on each stem, each bearing three sepals and three petals of various shades of purple and white. The variety nudicaulis of Iris pumila is characterized by its naked stems, while the alba variety of Iris biflora boasts white flowers. This botanical illustration is a testament to the artistry and dedication of the 19th-century botanical community, who meticulously documented and celebrated the natural world. The intricate details of the petals, sepals, and veins are brought to life through the skillful use of hand-coloring, making this a stunning addition to any collection of botanical art.
