EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Harriet or Edward Griffith and published in Edward Griffiths' "The Animal Kingdom" by the renowned French naturalist Georges Cuvier in 1824, showcases two intriguing and vulnerable mammal species from the European Pyrenees: the Pyrenean desman (Galemys pyrenaicus) and the star-nosed mole (Condylura cristata). The Pyrenean desman, also known as the Desmax of the Pyrenees or the Pyrenean water-pig, is a semi-aquatic mammal with a sleek, dark coat and webbed hind feet, perfectly adapted for its habitat in the fast-flowing mountain streams of the Pyrenees. Once widespread throughout the region, this elusive creature has seen its population decline due to habitat loss and fragmentation, making it a vulnerable species today. The star-nosed mole, also known as the Condylure or radiated mole, is a unique and fascinating creature with an extraordinary sensory system. Its most notable feature is its star-shaped nose, covered in 22 fleshy tentacles, which allows it to detect prey in complete darkness. This mole species is native to eastern North America and has not been recorded in Europe. However, the Pyrenean desman and the star-nosed mole share a common name in French: "mygale pyreneica" and "condylure radieuse," respectively. This beautifully detailed engraving not only highlights the unique features and adaptations of these two fascinating creatures but also serves as a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts to protect vulnerable species and their habitats.
