EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Queen Claude, the first wife of King Francis I of France, in an elegant and regal pose. Born in 1499 as Claude de Valois, she was the eldest daughter of the Duke of Angoulême and Anne of Brittany. Her marriage to Francis I in 1514 marked a significant political alliance between France and the Duchy of Brittany. In this portrait, Queen Claude is shown wearing a richly decorated chaperon headdress, a popular fashion accessory among the French nobility during the Renaissance period. The chaperon, made of velvet, is adorned with intricate embroidery and fur trimmings. The open front of her velvet robe reveals a voluminous skirt, also made of velvet, which is further embellished with jewels and gold thread. The fur sleeves add an extra layer of warmth and luxury. Queen Claude completes her regal appearance with a pair of elegant gloves and a diadem adorned with pearls and precious stones. The portrait is based on a drawing by Janet Clouet, a renowned artist of the time, and was later hand-coloured and engraved by Georges Jacques Gatine and Louis Marie Lante for the Galerie Francaise de Femmes Celebres in Paris in 1827. The intricate details and vibrant colours of the print bring the elegance and sophistication of the French court to life, offering a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the Renaissance era.
