EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate stipple engraving depicts the vibrant Red Buckeye, Aesculus pavia, also known as the Firecracker Plant, Oclock, Umbrellawort, Mirabilis Viscosa, Calixhymenia, Oxybaphus Viscosus, Ossibafo, or Vischioso. The illustration was created in 1837 as part of Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Science, published in Florence, Italy. The Red Buckeye is a native North American tree or large shrub, known for its showy, bright red flowers that resemble firecrackers when in bloom. The tree is part of the Horseshoe-tree family (Sapindaceae) and is not related to the true buckeyes (Aesculus spp.) of the Buckeye family (Sapindaceae). The illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), who is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century. Turpin's meticulous attention to detail and exceptional artistic skill are evident in this beautiful engraving. The Red Buckeye's edible fruit, which resembles a small, brown buckeye nut, is also depicted in the illustration. The Red Buckeye has historical significance in botany and botanical illustration, and this particular illustration is a testament to the beauty and intricacy of 19th-century botanical art. The illustration was engraved by Corsi and published by Batelli e Figli.
