EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored engraving depicts a Red Hartebeest, Alcelaphus buselaphus caama, also known as the Caama or Damalis caama. The image is based on a specimen housed in the British Museum and was created by the skilled hands of H. Kearsley, following an illustration by the renowned natural history artist, Charles Hamilton Smith. The engraving is taken from Edward Griffiths' seminal work, "The Animal Kingdom" published by Whittaker in London in 1827, and edited by the esteemed Baron Cuvier. The Red Hartebeest is a large antelope species native to Eastern and Southern Africa. Males are characterized by their distinctive large, curved horns, while females have smaller, straight horns. Their coat is a rich, reddish-brown color, with white underbellies and black markings on their faces and legs. Red Hartebeest are herbivores, feeding primarily on grasses, leaves, and shoots. They are social animals, living in herds that can range from a few individuals to several hundred. They are also known for their agility and speed, able to reach speeds of up to 50 miles per hour in short bursts. The Red Hartebeest has played an important role in natural history, with early naturalists and collectors documenting their observations and collecting specimens for study and display. This engraving is a testament to the fascination and appreciation for the natural world that drove the scientific exploration of the 19th century.
