EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the tense moment in English history when Richard III, Duke of Gloucester (1452-1485), assumes the role of protector for his nephews, the sons of the late King Edward IV (1442-1483), following their father's untimely death. The scene takes place in the late 1480s, during a period of political instability and power struggles within the Plantagenet dynasty. Richard III stands before the boys, Edward V (1470-1483) and Richard, Duke of York (1473-1484), with a determined expression on his face. His protective hand rests on the shoulder of the eldest prince, Edward, while the other hand gestures towards the younger boy, Richard. The duke's loyal dogs, standing at his feet, add an air of intimidation and protection. Elizabeth Woodville (1437-1492), the boys' mother and a widow, is not present in the photograph. She had been banished from the court and her sons were taken from her custody, raising fears of danger and uncertainty for their future. Richard III's actions were driven by a desire to protect the young princes from potential harm and to secure his own position as the next in line for the throne. The boys, dressed in rich robes and with expressions of fear and apprehension on their faces, appear to be reluctantly parted from their mother. The image captures the sense of unease and uncertainty that marked this period in English history, as the balance of power shifted and the future of the royal line was uncertain.
