EDITORS COMMENTS
Rigaud d'Aureille: Knight, Ambassador, and Master of the Hotel du Roi (1455-1517) This striking handcoloured lithograph depicts Rigaud d'Aureille, an influential figure in the late medieval French court. Born in Toulouse, Rigaud rose to prominence as a knight, ambassador, and the Master of the Hotel du Roi, a position akin to the Master of the King's Household. The portrait, taken from Roger de Gaignières' portfolio VIII 5 and 9 in the collection "Costumes Historiques de la France," showcases Rigaud's refined elegance and sophisticated attire. He is depicted wearing a richly decorated surcoat, emblazoned with the fleur-de-lis, the symbol of the French monarchy. The intricate gold and silver embroidery on his garments, as well as the fur-trimmed cloak, signify his high rank and wealth. As a knight, Rigaud would have been a member of the nobility, and his military prowess would have been essential in defending the kingdom. His role as an ambassador required diplomatic skills, as he represented the interests of the French court in foreign lands. Lastly, as the Master of the Hotel du Roi, he was responsible for managing the royal household, ensuring the smooth running of the court, and overseeing the provisioning and logistics of the royal household. Rigaud d'Aureille's multifaceted role at the French court during the late Middle Ages highlights the complexities of the medieval political landscape, where knights, diplomats, and court officials played vital roles in maintaining the power and prestige of the monarchy.
