EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored steel engraving depicts the Rocket plant, also known as Arugula, Eruca vesicaria, Eruca sativa, or Roquette cultivee. The intricately detailed illustration was created by Edouard Maubert and beautifully rendered in steel engraving by Alphonse-Leon Noel. The artwork was originally published as part of the comprehensive botanical work "La Regne Vegetal: Flore Medicale" by Pierre Oscar Reveil, published by L. Guerin in Paris between 1864 and 1871. The Rocket plant is a cool-season vegetable that belongs to the Brassicaceae family. Its distinctive leaves have a pungent, peppery flavor and a slightly bitter taste. The plant is native to the Mediterranean region and has been cultivated for its edible leaves since ancient times. The Rocket plant is rich in nutrients, including vitamins A, C, and K, as well as calcium, iron, and folate. The botanical illustration captures the plant in all its glory, from its slender stem and delicate flowers to its lobed leaves. The meticulous attention to detail and the vibrant hand-coloring make this engraving a true work of art. The Rocket plant has been used for medicinal purposes for centuries, and this beautiful illustration serves as a testament to its historical significance and enduring appeal.
