Royal Navy - Grumman G-36A or G-36B Martlet I
Royal Navy - Grumman G-36A or G-36B Martlet I (without knowing the serial number its hard to tell). The French and British Purchasing Commissions ordered Grumman G-36A and G-36Bs respectively. None of the French aircraft reached France before they capitulated in 1940, so they were all diverted to Great Britain, entering service as the Martlet I. The G-36 was to all intents and purposes equivalent to the US Navy F4F-3 Wildcat, but modified to suit the customers, like push throttles instead of pull throttles, British instruments and Radios. Date: circa 1940s

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a Royal Navy Grumman G-36A or G-36B Martlet I fighter aircraft in flight during the 1940s. The Grumman G-36s were initially ordered by the French and British Purchasing Commissions as part of their preparations for the Second World War. However, none of the French aircraft reached France before their capitulation in 1940, leading to all of them being diverted to Great Britain. Upon entering service with the Royal Navy, these aircraft were known as the Martlet I and proved to be a valuable addition to the British fleet. The G-36 was essentially equivalent to the US Navy's F4F-3 Wildcat, but with modifications to suit the specific requirements of the British, such as push throttles instead of pull throttles, British instruments, and radios. The Martlet I was a crucial combat aircraft during the wartime era, providing essential air support for naval operations. Its sleek design and powerful engine enabled it to outmaneuver many enemy aircraft, making it a formidable presence in the skies. This photograph captures the essence of the Martlet I in action, with its distinctive markings and streamlined shape on display as it soars through the clouds. The 1940s were a pivotal period in aviation history, and the Grumman G-36A and G-36B Martlet I played a significant role in the Royal Navy's efforts during this time. This image serves as a reminder of the bravery and innovation of the pilots and engineers who helped shape the course of the war.
