EDITORS COMMENTS
This double-page spread from the Illustrated London News, published on January 12, 1918, offers a glimpse into the Russo-German negotiations at Brest-Litovsk during the final stages of World War I. The image on the left shows Bolshevist minister Maxim Litvinoff (seated, second from left) and other Russian representatives in London, awaiting the arrival of their delegates at Brest-Litovsk station. The delegates, including Adolf Joffe (third from left), Mikhail Kameneff (fourth from left), and Mikhail Biecenko (fifth from left), were under immense pressure to secure favorable terms for the newly established Soviet government. On the right, Lenin (center) and the German and Austrian delegation, led by Prince Leopold of Bavaria (signing the document), await the arrival of the Russian delegates at the negotiation table. The session hall at Brest-Litovsk is depicted in the background, where intense discussions and debates took place between the parties. Among the Russian delegates were prominent figures such as Adolf Abramovich Altvater (seated, far left), Moisei Uritsky (standing, far left), Leonid Krasin (standing, second from right), and Leonid Krassin (standing, third from right). The German delegation included General Max Hoffmann (standing, second from right), General Erich Ludendorff (standing, far right), and Count Ulrich von Brockdorff-Rantzau (seated, far right). The Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, signed on March 3, 1918, marked the end of Russia's participation in World War I and led to significant territorial losses for the newly formed Soviet Union. The negotiations were a turning point in the history of the Russian Revolution and the Russian-German relationship.
