This lithograph, created by Karl Joseph Brodtmann in 1836 for Heinrich Rudolf Schinz's Illustrated Natural History of Men and Animals, showcases two endangered species of African antelope: the Saiga antelope (Saiga tatarica) and the Dorcas gazelle (Gazella dorcas). The Saiga antelope, critically endangered, is a large antelope with a distinctive bulbous nose, which filters dust and warms cold air before it enters the lungs. Once widespread across the Eurasian steppe, their population has drastically declined due to habitat loss, poaching, and disease. The Dorcas gazelle, vulnerable, is a small, slender antelope with distinct black markings on its face and legs. They are found in arid regions of Africa, particularly in the Horn of Africa and the Sahara Desert. Their population has also been impacted by habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict. This beautiful artwork serves as a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts to protect these magnificent creatures and preserve biodiversity.
