EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely detailed hand-colored copperplate print showcases the Sand Goby, Pomatoschistus minutus, also known as the Spotted Goby or the Minute Goby. The Sand Goby is a small, bottom-dwelling fish native to the North Atlantic and Mediterranean seas. It can be found in both marine and brackish waters, preferring sandy or muddy substrates. The Sand Goby is a well-camouflaged fish, with a sandy-brown coloration that allows it to blend seamlessly into its environment. Its body is elongated and slender, with a small, upturned mouth and a distinctive black spot on each side of its body. The fish in this illustration appears to be resting on the sandy bottom, its fins folded neatly against its body. This beautiful illustration was drawn and engraved by Edward Donovan for his seminal work, "The Natural History of British Fishes," published by Donovan and Rivington in London between 1802 and 1808. Donovan was a renowned Irish naturalist and artist, who is credited with producing some of the most accurate and detailed illustrations of his time. His work was groundbreaking in the field of ichthyology and zoology, and his meticulous attention to detail is evident in this stunning print. The Sand Goby is an important species in its ecosystem, serving as both a prey item and a predator. It is also of interest to anglers, who value its delicate flavor and fighting spirit. Today, the Sand Goby remains a popular subject of scientific study, and its population is considered stable, although it is threatened by habitat loss and pollution in some areas.
