EDITORS COMMENTS
Sarcolaena multiflora, also known as Hedyosmum bonplandianum, Sarcolena di molti fiori, or Ediosmon del Bonpland, is a stunning and intricately beautiful plant native to Madagascar. This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, created by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. Turpin, considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century, skillfully captured the essence of this exotic plant, with its vibrant, star-shaped flowers and glossy, green leaves. The engraving was drawn and directed by Turpin, and published by Batelli e Figli. The Sarcolaena multiflora, a member of the Hedyosmum family, is also known for its edible fruit. The plant was first discovered and described by Aimé Bonpland and Alexandre de Humboldt during their famous expedition to South America in the late 18th century. The plant was later introduced to Europe and became a popular addition to botanical gardens and collections. This enchanting illustration is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the natural world, and a reminder of the important role that botanical illustrations played in the exploration and documentation of new species during the 19th century. The intricate details and vibrant colors of this hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving continue to captivate and inspire viewers today.
