EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handfinished chromolithograph depicts a collection of Saxifragus species, including Thick-leaved Saxifrage (Saxifragus crassifolia), Nepaul Saxifrage (Saxifragus ligulata), Saxifragus appositifolia, Saxifragus stellaris, and two unidentified Saxifragus varieties. The intricately detailed illustration was created by Jane Loudon and expertly hand-finished by Henry Noel Humphreys for Mrs. Jane Loudon's Ladies Flower Garden of Ornamental Perennials, published in London in 1849 by William S. Orr. Saxifragus is a genus of flowering plants in the Saxifragaceae family, known for their attractive, often mound-forming, evergreen or deciduous perennials. The name "Saxifragus" comes from the Latin words "saxum," meaning stone, and "frangere," meaning to break, referring to the plant's ability to grow in rocky environments. The Saxifragus species showcased in this print exhibit various leaf shapes and sizes, ranging from thick and crinkled to thin and delicate. The flowers, which bloom in various shades of pink, white, and red, add a delightful touch to the already striking foliage. This Victorian-era lithograph is a testament to the exquisite artistry and botanical knowledge of its creators. It invites us to appreciate the beauty and diversity of these enchanting plants and serves as a reminder of the rich horticultural history that continues to inspire gardeners and plant enthusiasts today.
