EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a collection of ancient Saxon weapons discovered in England during the early 19th century. The iron swords, numbered 1 and 2, were unearthed from the River Wytham in Lincolnshire. Their intricate designs and well-preserved condition attest to the advanced metalworking skills of the Saxon craftsmen. The swords, with their broad, single-edged blades and distinctive hilt decorations, were likely used in both ceremonial and combat contexts. Three dirks and daggers, numbered 3, 4, and unnumbered, were also discovered in the River Wytham. These weapons, with their sharp points and slender blades, were primarily used for close-quarter combat. The dirks, or throwing daggers, were designed for maximum penetration and could be thrown with great accuracy. The daggers, with their more substantial hilts, were intended for hand-to-hand combat. The final weapon in this collection is a crossbow bolt, discovered in the camp at Danbury, Essex. Crossbows were a formidable weapon during the Saxon period, capable of delivering a heavy, well-aimed projectile with great force. The bolt, with its finely crafted head and shaft, would have been a valuable addition to any warrior's arsenal. This impressive collection of Saxon weapons is depicted in this beautiful copperplate engraving by Record, taken from Francis Grose's "Military Antiquities respecting a History of the English Army," published by Stockdale in London in 1812. The meticulous detail in the engraving allows us to appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship of these ancient weapons, providing a fascinating glimpse into the military culture of the Saxon era.
