EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph depicts two exquisite parrot species, the Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao) and the Orange-winged Amazon (Amazona amazonica), from the Complete Works of Buffon by Th. Lejeune, published in Brussels in 1837. The Scarlet Macaw, also known as the Great Macaw, is a large, vibrant bird with a distinctive red, blue, and yellow plumage, and a long, curved beak. They are native to Central and South America and are known for their intelligence and ability to mimic human speech. The Orange-winged Amazon, on the other hand, is a medium-sized parrot with green plumage, black flight feathers, and distinctive orange wing linings and tail tips. They are native to the Amazon Basin and are popular in aviculture due to their attractive appearance and friendly demeanor. The intricate details of these birds are beautifully captured in this lithograph, with each feather and contour expertly rendered in color. The background is kept simple, allowing the birds to take center stage. The title and descriptive text are written in French, reflecting the European origin of the publication. This print is an excellent example of the high-quality ornithological illustrations produced during the 19th century, when there was a growing interest in the natural world and a desire to document and preserve the diversity of species. It is a testament to the beauty and complexity of these birds and serves as a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts to protect them in the wild.
