EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-coloured lithograph, taken from Carl Hoffmann's esteemed "Book of the World" published in Stuttgart in 1849, showcases an enchanting collection of six different species of sea cucumbers. The first sea cucumber, identified as Trochodota purpurea, is characterized by its elongated body and purple hue. The second and third specimens are Cladodactyla crocea, easily distinguished by their bright orange coloration and multiple, long, slender tentacles. The fourth sea cucumber is Stichopus chloronotus, with a greenish-yellow body and a more rounded shape. The fifth specimen is Anaperus peruvianus, featuring a cylindrical body and a distinct, dark band around its midsection. Lastly, the sixth sea cucumber is identified as Holothuria (Metriatyla) lessoni, which boasts a unique, elongated, and slender body with a light brown coloration. Sea cucumbers, also known as "Cucumaria" in Latin, are a diverse group of echinoderms, known for their elongated, cylindrical or oval bodies, and their ability to move by means of their tube feet. They inhabit various marine environments, from the shallow waters of the intertidal zone to the deep abyssal plains. This stunning lithograph not only showcases the diverse range of sea cucumber species but also highlights the intricate detail and artistry of 19th-century natural history illustration. Each specimen is meticulously rendered, capturing their unique features and colors in exquisite detail.
