EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured woodblock engraving is a botanical illustration of Sea Holly, Eryngium minus, and Hogs Fennel, Peucedanum officinale, taken from the Herbal, or Krauterbuch, of Adam Lonicer, published in Frankfurt in 1557. The intricately detailed image showcases the unique textures and forms of these two coastal plants, both of which have a long history of medicinal use. Sea Holly, also known as Blue Sage or Sea Aster, is depicted on the left side of the print. Its distinctive blue-green foliage and thistle-like flowers are displayed in all their glory. Sea Holly was believed to have various medicinal properties, including the ability to treat wounds, relieve pain, and even act as a diuretic. On the right side of the print, Hogs Fennel, or Wild Fennel, is illustrated. Its feathery leaves and yellow flowers are depicted in vibrant detail. Hogs Fennel was used in traditional medicine for its digestive properties and to help alleviate respiratory issues. This botanical illustration is a stunning example of the intricate detail and artistry of 16th-century botanical engravings. The woodblock engraving process involved carving the design into a block of wood, inking it, and then pressing it onto paper to create the final image. The addition of handcolouring further enhances the detail and brings the plants to life. This particular print is from a 17th-century pirate edition or atlas of illustrations only, which features captions in Latin, Greek, French, Italian, German, and English manuscript. The Latin name for Sea Holly is Eryngium minus, and for Hogs Fennel is Peucedanum officinale. These names reflect the plants' historical classification and provide a glimpse into the rich linguistic and scientific traditions of the time.
