EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases the majestic Sei Whale, Balaenoptera borealis, an endangered species of baleen whale. The image is taken from Rene Primevere's "Lessons Complements de Buffon," published by Pourrat Freres in Paris in 1838. This work was an essential contribution to the field of zoology and natural history, providing detailed illustrations of various animal species. The Sei Whale, also known as the "Sea Cow of the North," is the second largest of the rorqual whales, reaching lengths of up to 50 feet and weighing as much as 45 tons. They are easily identified by their long, slender bodies, large pectoral fins, and distinctive, curved dorsal fin. Sei Whales are filter feeders, using their baleen plates to strain krill and other small organisms from the water. Unfortunately, Sei Whales have faced significant threats in recent centuries. They were heavily hunted for their oil and meat, leading to a dramatic decline in their populations. Although commercial whaling of Sei Whales was banned in the 1960s, they continue to face threats from bycatch, climate change, and pollution. This beautiful engraving serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting these magnificent creatures and their habitats. It also highlights the rich history of natural history illustration and the crucial role it plays in documenting and preserving the natural world for future generations.
