This stunning chromolithograph depicts a collection of intricately detailed mushrooms, showcasing the beauty and diversity of the mycological world. At the center, the Shingled Hedgehog, or Sarcodon imbricatus (also known as Hydnum imbricatum), is displayed with its distinctive shingled cap and spindly legs. To its right, the Zoned Hydnellum, or Hydnellum concrescens (also known as Hydnum zonatum), boasts concentric zones on its cap and a white, warty stem. The Pinecone Mushroom, or Auriscalpium vulgare (also known as Hydnum auriscalpium), is depicted on the left with its pinecone-shaped cap and white, felted pores. These mushrooms were meticulously illustrated by A. Bessin and later reproduced as a chromolithograph by Lassus for Leon Rolland's seminal guide to mushrooms from France, Switzerland, and Belgium, published by Paul Klincksieck in Paris in 1910. This exquisite print serves as a testament to the rich history of mycological exploration and the enduring allure of the fungal kingdom.
