EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored engraving, taken from Charles d'Orbigny's Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle (Universal Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris in 1849, showcases two fascinating species of anteaters: the Silky Anteater, Cyclopes didactylus, and the Giant Anteater, Myrmecophaga tridactyla. The Silky Anteater, also known as the Pygmy Anteater or the Two-fingered Anteater, is depicted on the left side of the image. With its small size, measuring only around 25 centimeters in length, and its silky, golden fur, this anteater is a striking contrast to its larger counterpart. The Silky Anteater's most distinctive feature is its two-fingered front paws, which are adapted for gripping tree branches and extracting insects from their hiding places. On the right side of the image, the Giant Anteater, the largest anteater species, can be seen. Reaching lengths of up to three meters and weighing up to 40 kilograms, this anteater is a formidable presence in the animal kingdom. Its long, sticky tongue, which can extend up to 30 centimeters, is used to extract ants and termites from their colonies. The Giant Anteater is a vulnerable species, with populations declining due to habitat loss and fragmentation, making conservation efforts crucial for its survival. The illustration was produced by the skilled hand of Edouard Travies, with the engraving expertly executed by Fournier. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring these fascinating creatures to life, offering a glimpse into the natural world of the past. This beautiful piece of natural history art serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the diverse and wondrous creatures that inhabit our planet.
