EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in the late 19th century, showcases the proud and warrior-like Singhpo tribe from the southern frontier of Assam, India. The Singhpos, also known as the Jingpos, are an indigenous ethnic group inhabiting the hilly regions along the Laos-Myanmar border and the Indian states of Assam and Manipur. During the Victorian era, the British Raj ordered extensive ethnographic documentation of the diverse population of India, resulting in the publication of "The People of India: A Series of Photographic Illustrations" under the supervision of Lord Canning. This photograph is a testament to the rich cultural heritage and ethnic diversity of India during that era. The Singhpo men in this image are adorned with traditional body tattoos, symbolizing their tribal identity and warrior status. Their fierce expressions and the weapons they carry, such as spears and shields, underscore their reputation as a warlike people. The women, dressed in colorful skirts and blouses, wear intricate necklaces and bracelets made of beads and shells. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the lives of the Singhpo people during a time when their lands were being encroached upon by colonial powers. It is a reminder of the importance of preserving the histories and traditions of indigenous communities, especially those that have faced the brunt of external influences and change. The vintage aesthetic of this photograph, with its soft focus and muted colors, adds to its timeless appeal. It invites us to explore the grand history and diverse ethnicities of India, and to appreciate the resilience and strength of the people who have called this land their home for generations.
