EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: Sir Henry Parkes, Colonial Australian Politician and Longest Non-Consecutive Premier of New South Wales (1815-1896). This black-and-white photograph captures Sir Henry Parkes, a pivotal figure in the political history of colonial Australia. Born on March 25, 1815, in England, Parkes migrated to New South Wales in 1839 and quickly established himself as a prominent figure in the colony's political landscape. He served as the longest non-consecutive Premier of New South Wales, holding the position a total of six times between 1872 and 1891. Parkes played a crucial role in shaping the political and social fabric of New South Wales. He advocated for responsible government, which granted greater autonomy to the colonial legislature and paved the way for self-governance. Parkes also championed the cause of free education, land reform, and the separation of Church and State. During his tenure, he oversaw significant infrastructure projects, including the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the expansion of the rail network. Parkes' political legacy extended beyond New South Wales, as he played a key role in the Federation of the Australian colonies, which led to the formation of the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. This photograph was taken in the late 1890s, a few years before Parkes' death on April 27, 1896. The image captures the distinguished statesman in his later years, with a stern expression and a well-groomed beard. Parkes' contributions to Australian politics and society continue to be celebrated, and he is remembered as a founding father of modern Australia.
