EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Species of Shrimp," is an exquisite illustration from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's "Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali," or "Dictionary of Natural Sciences," published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was engraved by Corsi, drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre, and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. The engraving showcases an impressive array of shrimp species, including the Spirontocaris spinus, Hippolyte variabilis, Penaeus species, Processa canaliculata, and Athanas nitescens. The shrimp are depicted with intricate detail and accuracy, reflecting the meticulous skill of the illustrators and engravers. The shrimp illustrated in this print span a range of sizes, shapes, and colors. For example, the Spirontocaris spinus, also known as the brown shrimp or Crangon vulgaris, is depicted with a brown, elongated body and numerous spines. The Hippolyte variabilis, or grey shrimp, is shown with a grey-brown coloration and a more rounded body shape. The Penaeus species, or common pink shrimp, is illustrated with a pinkish hue and a slender body. The Processa canaliculata, or Montagu's shrimp, is depicted with a translucent, almost transparent body, and the Athanas nitescens, or Aesop's shrimp, is shown with a dark, almost black coloration. This beautiful and historically significant illustration is a testament to the artistry and scientific precision of the time, providing a detailed record of various shrimp species that continues to be appreciated and studied today.
