Sphere Unknown Warrior

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Unknown Warrior: A Tribute to the Fallen Heroes of World War I This poignant image, taken from The Sphere issue dated November 27, 1920 (Page 166), captures the solemn and moving moment when an Unknown Warrior was laid to rest in Westminster Abbey, London. The Unknown Warrior represents the over 700,000 British and Empire soldiers who lost their lives during World War I, whose identities were never identified. The ceremony, presided over by King George V and Queen Mary, was a tribute to the sacrifices made by the brave men and women who served and died during the war. The Unknown Warrior's coffin was carried from the Royal Navy ship HMS Verdun to the Abbey by six sailors, six soldiers, and six airmen, symbolizing the unity of the armed forces. The image shows the coffin being carried through the nave of the Abbey, surrounded by mourners, including veterans, military personnel, and civilians. The somber expression on the faces of the mourners conveys the gravity of the moment and the collective grief felt by the nation. The Unknown Warrior's tomb, located near the High Altar, is marked by a simple slab inscribed with the words, "A British Warrior who fell in the Great War 1914-1918 for King and Country." The tomb has since become a symbol of remembrance and hope, inspiring generations to honor the sacrifices made by the fallen heroes of World War I and to strive for peace. This powerful and evocative image serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made during World War I and the enduring legacy of the Unknown Warrior as a symbol of courage, sacrifice, and unity.
