EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "Wonders of the Arachnid and Scorpion World: A Vibrant Menagerie from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's Picture Book for Children, 1792" This handcoloured copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's "Bilderbuch fur Kinder" (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar, 1792, showcases an enchanting collection of spiders and scorpions. The illustration includes six distinct arachnids and three scorpions, each displaying their unique features and allure. At the center, the Goliath bird-eating spider (Theraphosa blondi) is depicted with a hummingbird, showcasing an unusual interaction between these two unrelated species. The Goliath bird-eating spider is the largest spider species in the world, known for its impressive size and powerful jaws. The hummingbird, on the other hand, is a small, colorful bird that feeds on nectar, adding an intriguing element to this illustration. Next to the Goliath bird-eating spider, an Italian tarantula (Lycosa tarantula) is shown. This medium-sized spider is native to Europe and is often associated with the legend of the tarantella dance, which was believed to cure tarantula bites. Three other spiders are also presented: the orange spider of Curacao, a vibrant arachnid native to the Caribbean islands; and two unidentified species. The scorpions in this illustration include representatives from India, America, and Europe. The Indian scorpion is known for its distinctive, long tail with a venomous stinger, while the American scorpion is characterized by its yellowish-brown color and large pincers. The European scorpion, though rare, is depicted with a more slender body and shorter tail. This stunning illustration not only showcases the diverse and fascinating world of arachnids and scorpions but also highlights the intricate detail and artistry of copperplate engraving during the late 18th century.
