EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-finished chromolithograph showcases a charming arrangement of six distinctive flowering perennials: Common Spiderwort (Tradescantia virginica), Sky-blue Commelin (Commelina caelestis), Copper-coloured Day Lily (Funkia fulva), Large-flowered Sisyrinchium (Sisyrinchium grandiflorum), and two varieties of Day Lilies, with one being the Common Day Lily (Tradescantia spp.). The illustration is taken from "Mrs. Jane Loudon's Ladies Flower Garden of Ornamental Perennials," published in London in 1849. The work was produced by renowned botanical artist Jane Loudon and expertly reproduced as a chromolithograph by Henry Noel Humphreys. The Common Spiderwort, also known as the Wandering Jew, is characterized by its trifoliate leaves and blue, purple, or white flowers. The Sky-blue Commelin boasts delicate, sky-blue flowers adorned with white stripes, while the Copper-coloured Day Lily displays vibrant coppery-orange blooms. The Large-flowered Sisyrinchium, also known as Blue-eyed Grass, boasts striking blue-violet flowers with yellow centers. This print not only serves as a beautiful addition to any botanical collection but also offers a glimpse into the rich horticultural knowledge of the Victorian era. The intricate details of the flowers and their foliage are rendered with remarkable precision, making this a must-have for any gardening enthusiast or nature lover.
