This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases the Spiny Dye-Murex, scientifically known as Bolinus brandaris, also referred to as the Snipe Murex or Purple Murex. The illustration was meticulously drawn and engraved by the skilled hands of Richard Polydore Nodder and published in George Shaw and Frederick Nodder's The Naturalist's Miscellany in London, 1804. The Spiny Dye-Murex is a large marine gastropod mollusk, known for its distinctive spiny shell and vibrant purple hue. The species is native to the Mediterranean and the Atlantic coasts of Europe and North America. The shell is characterized by its elongated shape, with a conical apex and a spire that tapers towards the rear. The outer surface of the shell is adorned with intricate patterns of raised ridges and spines, providing excellent camouflage against predators. The Spiny Dye-Murex is renowned for its ability to produce a valuable purple dye, which was highly prized in ancient civilizations for use in textiles and cosmetics.
