EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Spoonleaf Treebine, Cissus obovata, also known as Achit caustique, Cissus caustica, or Swamp Horsetail. The image is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was engraved by Bourrey and drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator, Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). Turpin is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his meticulous attention to detail and accurate representation of plants. The Spoonleaf Treebine is a climbing plant native to tropical regions, with obovate-shaped leaves that resemble spoons. The plant is also known for its edible fruits, which are often used in traditional medicine and as a vegetable. The treebine can be found growing in swampy areas near water, and its leaves are sometimes compared to the tails of horses, earning it the common name "horsetail." The engraving shows the plant growing in a swampy environment, with the fluviatile, or river-dwelling, Equisetum, or horsetail, in the background. The intricate details of the Spoonleaf Treebine's leaves, stems, and flowers are beautifully rendered in this exquisite work of botanical art. The handcolouring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a true masterpiece of natural history.
