The event is believed to have taken place in Rome during the reign of Emperor Nero, around 69 AD. Saint Peter, a fisherman by trade, was a key figure in the early Christian movement. He was famously the first disciple to acknowledge Jesus as the Messiah and was later appointed by Jesus as the leader of the apostles. However, after Jesus' arrest and crucifixion, Peter denied knowing him three times, an act of betrayal that he deeply regretted. According to tradition, after Jesus' death, Peter traveled to Rome and preached the gospel there, converting many to Christianity. He was eventually arrested and brought before Nero, who ordered him to be crucified. The story goes that Peter requested to be crucified upside down, as he felt unworthy to die in the same way as his master.
