EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate engraving, taken from the seminal work of Bavarian clergyman and naturalist, Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm's Encyclopedia of Natural History: Fish, published in Augsburg in 1804, showcases two fascinating marine creatures: the Star Gazer (Uranoscopus scaber) and the Great Weaver Fish (Trachinus draco). The Star Gazer, depicted on the left, is a small, flatfish with a unique and intriguing appearance. Its body is covered in small, star-like markings, earning it the common name 'Star Gazer.' This bottom-dwelling fish is well-camouflaged against the sandy seafloor, allowing it to blend seamlessly into its environment and ambush unsuspecting prey. The Star Gazer's large, protruding eyes are adapted to detect the faint glow of bioluminescent organisms, making it an expert night hunter. On the right, the Great Weaver Fish, or Threadfin Weaver, is displayed in all its glory. This large, predatory fish is characterized by its elongated, slender body and distinctive, thread-like fins. The Great Weaver Fish is a master of disguise, able to blend in with its surroundings by burying itself in the sand and covering itself with debris. When threatened, it can inflate its body and emit a foul-smelling substance to deter predators. Wilhelm's meticulous attention to detail and commitment to accurate representation is evident in this stunning engraving. The intricate patterns and textures of the Star Gazer and Great Weaver Fish are beautifully rendered, making this a valuable addition to any collection of historical ichthyology or marine life prints.
