Sunday morning with hop-pickers 1871
Hop picking season in Kent, men, women and children from many distant villages and town of Kent, Surrey, Sussex, East End of London, Southwark and Lambeth travelled along the roads leading to the scene of action in hope of two or three weeks of agreeable and profitable employment. When night descends, they lodged wherever they could find shelter in barns and outhouses, in gipsy tents or under hedges; cooking their food, sleeping and dressing in primitive camps, enjoying their leisure hour on the banks of the Medway, washing their clothes in the river. Date: 1871

EDITORS COMMENTS
Sunday Morning: A Glimpse into the Hop-Picking Community of 1871, Kent This evocative photograph captures the essence of a Sunday morning during the hop-picking season in Kent, England, in 1871. The scene unfolds on the banks of the River Medway, where men, women, and children from various villages and towns, including Kent, Surrey, Sussex, the East End of London, Southwark, and Lambeth, have gathered in hope of two or three weeks of agreeable and profitable employment. The hop-picking community was a temporary workforce that traveled along the roads leading to the hop fields each year. When night descended, they sought shelter wherever they could find it, in barns and outhouses, gipsy tents, or under hedges. Cooking their food, sleeping, and dressing in primitive camps, they enjoyed their leisure hours on the banks of the Medway, washing their clothes in the river, and partaking in the simple pleasures of life. The hop-pickers worked long hours, seven days a week, to ensure the successful cultivation of the hops that would later be used in the brewing of beer. In this photograph, we see them taking a break from their labor, gathered around a makeshift table, enjoying their Sunday morning meal. The men, women, and children sit together, sharing food and conversation, while some children play in the water's edge. The hop-picking community was an integral part of English and British life, providing employment opportunities for thousands each year. The temporary nature of their accommodation and the communal living arrangements created a unique and vibrant culture that continues to be celebrated today. This photograph offers a glimpse into a bygone era, a moment frozen in time that speaks to the resilience and adaptability of the human spirit.
