This exquisite handcoloured copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Surinam Toad, Pipa pipa, also known as the Rospo or Surinam Frog. The unique reproductive behavior of this toad is showcased in the image, with eggs visible on the skin of the female. The Surinam Toad is native to the tropical rainforests of South America, specifically in the countries of Suriname, French Guiana, and northern Brazil. The illustration was created in 1837 as part of Jussieus Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, a comprehensive dictionary of natural sciences published in Florence, Italy. The illustration was drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. Turpin, who is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century, brought exceptional detail and accuracy to his work. The engraving also features several other natural elements native to the region where the Surinam Toad is found. In the foreground, a wild teasel, Dipsacus fullonum, can be seen, along with several fullers or teasel plants, Sylvestris fullonum. These plants were historically used for the production of textiles, particularly for carding and cleaning wool. The intricate stipple engraving technique used in this illustration allowed for the creation of a highly detailed and textured image, enhancing the beauty and uniqueness of the Surinam Toad and its environment.
